3,400 home gardens boost women’s incomes: MAIL

KABULinfo-icon (PAJHWOK): Enabling womeninfo-icon to earn a living, 3,400 small fruit and vegetable home gardens and orchards have been established across the country, the Ministry of Agricultureinfo-icon, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) said on Tuesday.

A statement from MAIL said the orchards were aimed at boosting the economic situation of families and participation of women in agriculture. The home gardens have been established in Takhar, Badakhshan, Baghlan and Kunduz provinces in the past one year.

It said the beneficiaries, trained by MAIL experts on how to cultivate and grow vegetables, had also been given the required equipment, different kinds of vegetable seeds and chemical fertilisers.

Since the launch of the home garden project three years back, an initiative to engage women and supply quality vegetables to the market, more than 64,000 individuals have benefitted from the scheme.

The project is considered an effective MAIL initiative, helping women earn up to 10,000 afs a month. The step has also helped women meet their household expenses. MAIL plans to set up 8,500 more home gardens across the country.
